A Very Arty Party 2009

Our annual Very Arty Party was held at FORM Gallery on Murray Street under the artwork of the Roebourne Art Group and Martumili Artists, ‘Every Colour Is You’ exhibition. With the soulful jazz singing of Fiona Lawe Davies, this event gave our clients a chance to mingle, enjoy some food and drink and flex their creative muscle as they produced an individual tree branch to bring our Christmas trees to life.

The ‘Your branch is your canvas’ competition resulted in an outstanding level of creativity with some fantastic ‘outside the box’ ideas as well as some traditionally decorated branches. The winners each took home an individual Swarovski tree decoration. Congratulations to Deanna Campisi from the Cancer Council for her ‘Angel of Hope’ branch, which won 1st prize. A very special thankyou to all who attended and participated!

Kim Kay and the team wish clients, suppliers, friends and associates a safe and peaceful festive season and a New Year filled with promise.

Counting down to AOG 2010 and APPEA 2010

AOG 2010 in Perth and APPEA 2010 in Brisbane are two major events in the South Pacific region early next year. Most of the space has now been allocated and we are working on designs and costs for more than 20 clients for these exhibitions.

Should you require assistance with your stand – from a simple portable display, to a shell scheme or custom stand, we have the expertise to get it designed and delivered on time and on budget. Because of our significant presence at each of theses major events we will have our own contractors on site to ‘bump-in bump-out’ at each conference.

We will also some print production capacity on site for our clients to use if necessary.

Army Museum of Western Australia chooses BKAYDesign to create their new gallery

The first stage of a major gallery redevelopment for the Army Museum of Western Australia in Fremantle is to be designed and built by BKAYDesign.

The first gallery, to be known as The Post 1945 Gallery, has as one of its core aims “to engage the public in understanding and valuing the role and contribution of the Australian Army since the end of World War II, both within Australia and internationally”. This gallery will be the first of four specialised galleries, each one featuring a different chapter in Australian military history.

Graham Horne, the Chairman of the Army Museum of WA Foundation said the first priority would be to fit out the post-1945 gallery to include the Army’s involvement with many key conflicts and military opperations. These include the British Commonwealth Occupation Force in Japan from 1945, the Korean War, the Vietnam War and conflicts in Malaya, Indonesia, East Timor, Iraq and Afghanistan. In addition the gallery will include information and artefacts from a multitude of peacekeeping missions, the Australian Regular Army, Citizen Military Forces, the Army Reserve and Cadets in Western Australia.

BKAYDesign’s Kim Kay said his company was extremely proud to be associated with the design and construction of the Museum’s new gallery.

“It is very satisfying to help create a moving testimony to the role played by the Australian Army from 1945 to the present day,” he said.

“Our brief from the Army Museum of Western Australia is to engage visitors in a way that has not been possible before. To tell present and future generations of the sacrifices and challenges faced by Western Australian men and women who put their lives on the line in the service of their country. This gallery will have a strong focus on personal stories and experiences.”

BKAYDesign has an acknowledged expertise in designing and building exhibitions, largely for the oil and gas industry.

“Our core business is the imaginative use of third dimensional space and the opportunity to apply these skills to the creation of a museum of this class from the ground up is a challenge we grabbed with both hands”, Mr Kay said.

The Post 1945 Gallery of the museum will open on 22 April 2010 on the first floor of the western end of the Artillery Barracks at 2 Burt Street Fremantle. It is supported by an initial $581,000 grant from Lotterywest and a $2.5 million fundraising appeal has been launched to fund the development of this and the following three stages of the museum.

When finished, it is expected to attract thousands of people.

Report from Oran, Algeria on progress with LNG16
from Kim Kay

The LNG Exhibitors meeting held in Oran on September 23 and attended by our Exhibition Manager Greg Hoad and myself was an informative event and provided important insight into LNG16. It was terrific to meet up with many of you who attended and see first hand the exhibition venue as it is taking shape. It was also useful to be briefed on some of the challenging logistical aspects of the event, which as you know is now less than 200 days away in April 2010.

As far as the new Exhibition Centre is concerned, it is still under construction. The extensive work force is working in shifts 24 hours a day and is now ahead of schedule. On completion, the Oran Exhibition and Conference Centre’s inaugural event will be LNG 16, with every centimetre of the 15,000sqm being utilised.

With all eyes on Algeria, it will be an exciting prospect to take the centre through its paces and it will be critical for us to to call on our years of experience. We will be working closely with Exhibition and Trade Fairs, Agility and the Centre Management to ensure our clients receive the best outcome at this important international event.

Significant outcomes from the exhibitors’ meeting determined that one of the primary concerns would be the logistics. Greg Hoad, our Exhibition Production Manager and myself, have also been looking at the issue of logistics in Algeria. There are some obvious concerns and you will need to ensure clear and accurate scheduling is put into place as early as possible.

It will also be critical to organise to have your exhibit in Oran earlier than previously proposed. Off site storage areas have been negotiated and should you wish to be involved, please contact Greg Hoad direct. Importantly, let us assist you with your exhibit planning and scheduling.

Do you need help with the design of your stand?
Now we have had a further look and investigated the venue, our design acumen is of real value to you. You may already be aware that BKAYDesign have been appointed Preferred Custom Stand Contractors for LNG16. We have also already been appointed by a number of exhibitors and, as you would expect, will have the critical mass on the ground to ensure a trouble free and cost effective service, should you wish to make use of it

Please do not hesitate to contact Greg Hoad or myself with any queries.

Design @ Oil & Gas Asia 2009

On the back of the success at APPEA 2009, the BKAYDesign Exhibition team turned their attention to the major Asian Exhibition Conference, 10-12 June, 2009 where SPFA were exhibiting at Oil & Gas Asia.

With over 20,000 trade visitors, a record 17,000sqm of exhibition space and over 1,000 exhibitors, SPFA & BKAYDesign were in good International company. This was the 3rd time that the stand has been set up at an international exhibition and once again great interest was received from the trade visitors and other exhibitors alike.

The structure is based around the SPF logo and reinforces not only the brand but also the product line SPF produces and provides to the Petroleum industry. “It's a terrific structure our design team has created and along with innovative construction techniques we have developed, it comes together like a huge mechano set. It works really well” said Greg Hoad, Exhibition Production Manager.

BKAY
Design @ APPEA 2009 Review

This years APPEA exhibition and conference was BKAYDesigns 11th and most successful!

Providing design and construction services for some of the most prominent National & International Petroleum Industry Companies, 8 exhibits were produced in all.

Greg Hoad, BKAYDesign Exhibition Manager said, “Our experienced team were looking forward to being back in Darwin and working on this project. With 8 stands to build we needed to be organised and focused, and everything went extremely well. We were very pleased with the end result”.

For the first time in APPEA history a two storey exhibition stand was designed and produced and we can proudly say this was produced for Chevron by BKAYDesign. With only a 3 day bump in it was an intense logistical and construction period to realise the concepts developed by our design team. “Diversity and creativity were two important focuses that came out of this exhibition from 3m x 3m booth to a two storey stand, each one received creative development and attention to detail that resulted in very effective displays that all looked unique”, Mike Winter, Senior Designer, commented.

Plans have already commenced for next years APPEA in Brisbane, Queensland and after a series of lessons learnt with each client, BKAYDesign will be in a strong position to deliver another outstanding diverse range of exhibitions.

A big thank you to all of our Clients for providing a detailed brief, goal objectives and desired outcomes for our team to act upon to ensure excellent design results and to our suppliers for again providing outstanding quality and service.

Next years APPEA is in Brisbane, Queensland, from 16th to 19th May.

International work all about the connections
WA Business News by Mark Beyer

GRAPHIC design is not an industry normally associated with exports, yet West Perth firm BKAYDesign generates a big chunk of its revenue from sales to international clients. The firm has built a niche position in the international oil and gas industry, servicing clients as far afield as Houston in the US, and Angola.

Founder Kim Kay didn't expect the international work when he set up the firm in 1994. "If you asked me 14 years ago if I'd be doing work in Angola, I wouldn't have thought so," he told WA Business News. BKAYDesign's work includes designing and building three dimensional displays and exhibitions, brand development, and producing marketing material such as brochures and DVDs. It works mostly in oil and gas, and property. Its oil and gas clients include major petroleum and engineering companies such as Chevron, Shell, Inpex, Schlumberger and Tap Oil.

The firm's expansion into export markets has flowed in part from the connections Mr Kay made while working for global companies with operations in Western Australia. BKAY has also won major contracts through competitive tenders.

"Sure we have contacts, but there are opportunities offered to us that are strictly tenders and are open to the world," Mr Kay said. "It's very gratifying when we can win that work." A third contributor to the firm's growth has been Mr Kay's willingness to travel overseas. This included a visit six years ago to the Offshore Technology Conference in Houston, which attracts up to 70,000 delegates every year. "I went there a bit cautiously," Mr Kay said. "I'd just started working on (the) Angola (LNG project), and it was unclear how it would be effective. "It was effective in a couple of ways. One was the network with the (Australian) delegates that went. "It was also important for my relationship with Chevron here. It enabled me to understand the industry and their business even more." Mr Kay said the OTC visit, and his many other international trips, had been time consuming and at times demanding. "It's far easier to do it over the computer and over the phone," he said. "It's far easier to send someone else."

However, he attaches a lot of weight to the value of face-to-face meetings. "It definitely creates a very strong business relationship. It shows the importance of meeting people one-on-one and not just communicating with people over the net," Mr Kay said. BKAY's first oil and gas client was WAPET, a Perth-based consortium of international petroleum companies operating in WA. That was followed about 10 years ago by work on the Gorgon gas project - the same Gorgon project that Chevron and its partners are still working on. BKAY was initially invited to tender for the design and production of display material but proceeded to build a wider strategy for the promotion of Gorgon at LNG (liquefied natural gas) conferences. BKAY's work on Gorgon led to the Perth firm being asked to prepare display material for the Angola LNG project, in southern Africa. BKAY ended up designing an entire corporate identity for Angola LNG, including a brand, logotype and style guide. "Angola LNG is still one of our most important clients," Mr Kay said. "I've been to Angola for seven years, taking my people over and working with some of the locals to build exhibitions every year." The Angola LNG project gained final approval in 2007 and is currently under construction.

Another big break for the firm was a successful tender for Chevron's global gas business unit. It has since designed and built display and exhibition material for conferences in cities like Seoul, Barcelona and Bangkok. BKAY's export success provides a shining light for a campaign being run by the Industry Capability Network, which traditionally has focused on helping Australian suppliers win work on big Australian projects. ICN has widened its focus and is seeking to help Australian companies become integrated into the global supply chain networks run by big international resources and engineering companies.
